Professor Challenges Students Outside Class Through Flipped Learning
Flipped Learning is an innovative and exciting method that allows instructors to achieve students success. More and more educators around the country are talking about its benefits. This story is part of a series of posts on flipped learning that showcase how this method is helping to achieve student success at Kirkwood Community College.
“If we challenge our students to view these lecture presentations outside class, it makes in-class time more productive,” Art Khaw said. This Professor of Communication from the Arts and Humanities Department participated last semester in KCELT’s Flipped Learning Initiative. He decided to challenge himself and implemented this new method.
In this interview, Art expressed what his biggest challenge was regarding flipped learning: “ I think the biggest one [challenge] is obviously time. You need time. You need a lot of energy in term of really investing in this project, because the startup time is quite enormous”.
In addition, Art also shared his methodology to implement this model. For him, Backwards Design was the keystone: “[Implementing flipped learning] was actually quite a long process, in the sense that I wanted to start in the end first. So, I wanted to take a look at the learning objectives and what I wanted to accomplish with my assignments, my units, my modules. So I looked at the end first, and then basically [I] worked backwards. So that’s what we call Backwards Design”.
